Care home resident Kieran’s wish came true, when he visited the King Power Stadium to watch the football team he’s supported since childhood.

Kieran Gallagher, a resident at Greenacre Park care home in Leicester, achieved his goal of cheering on his team, Leicester FC, in the Championship title race.

Keiran’s been a life-long football enthusiast and used to attend football matches regularly.

He attended match day with Senior Health Care Assistants Jessica Burdett and Sinead Baker, and Health Care Assistant, Ruth Tallon.

They witnessed a much needed 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion F.C. in their race to be promoted to the Premier League.

After the game, he received a goodie bag and football shirt from the club, and met some of the players including Conor Coady and James Justin, who were happy to pose for photographs.

The day was made even more special as it was Keiran’s first football match since he sustained a hypoxic brain injury in 2017.

When he moved to Greenacre Park, Keiran only dreamed of seeing his favourite team in the flesh.

His brain injury left him with limited mobility, cognitive impairment and regular seizures, which made it difficult for him to sit for long periods of time and go outside of the home.

After learning of Kieran's wish, the team at the home worked to build his confidence, posture and balance, so he could sit for the duration of the game.

They’ve made the most of the Spring sunshine to gradually increase his exposure to the local community, including picnics in the park.

Leicester F.C’s Disabilities Liaison Officer helped them ensure the day was a success, with a stadium walk around beforehand to do a risk assessment.

Looking to the future

The team has now set new goals for Kieran, including starting hydrotherapy and watching Leicester Tigers play rugby.

Sameena Iqbal, Activities Co-ordinator at the home, shared: “Making sure people are happy and able to do the things they love is fundamental to the care we provide.

“We were thrilled to be able to give Kieran a day he won’t forget.

“Keiran has made great progress with his goals, and we’re excited to see what he achieves in the future.”
