Our history

Exemplar Health Care is founded as a healthcare management consultancy and training firm.

We identified a lack of appropriate care homes for young adults living with complex needs, and acquired our first five care homes to meet this gap in the care market. Our first care home to open was Longley Park View.

In 2003, we opened Greenside Court in Rotherham, Exemplar Health Care’s first purpose-built complex needs care home.

In 2004, we opened Fairwinds in Rotherham.

In 2005, we opened Fairburn Vale and Fairburn Mews in Castleford.

In 2006, we opened Dearnevale and Neville Court in Barnsley, Thames House in Rochdale, Scotia Heights in Stoke-On-Trent and The Lodge in Swallownest, Sheffield. We also acquired the former Hollywell Court care home in Sheffield, and renamed it Willowbeck.

In 2007, we opened Lonnen Grove in Rotherham and Bridgewood Mews in Dudley.

In 2008, we opened Parkside in Dudley, Quarryfields in Doncaster and Church Walk in Rochdale.

In 2009, we opened Meadowcroft, Pathways and Eastlands in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Havenmere in Immingham and Kavanagh Place in Liverpool.

In 2010, we opened Otterburn in Birmingham and Ravensdale in Leeds.

In 2011, we opened Yarningdale in Ripley.

In 2016, Agilitas, a European private equity firm, led a management buyout of Exemplar Health Care. The same year, we reviewed our model and started developing OneCare services alongside our care homes to provide a step-in and step-out service to independent living.

In 2017, we opened Maypole Grove in Kings Heath, Birmingham.

In 2018, we opened Lakeview in Leigh. In March our Dearnevale care home in Barnsley was rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission. We also introduced Exemplar Learning Management System (ELMS), our eLearning platform, and the My Exemplar app for internal colleagues, as part of our digital transformation journey.

In 2019, we opened Kingfisher View in Castleford, Brook View in Liverpool, St Andrew’s Court in Hull, Copperfields in Leeds and Ribble View in Preston.

In September 2020, we opened Tyne Grange, our first care home in the North East of England. In November 2020, the ownership of Exemplar Health Care transferred to Ares, a global investment company.

In 2021, we opened Wykewood, our first care home in Bradford, Marmaduke in Hull, Blackmoor in Birmingham and Bennett Court in South Elmsall. We excelled in our commitment to colleague development, achieving certification with the CPD Certification Service for three of our in-house training programmes and Bild ACT certification for our Exemplar Positive Behaviour Support training.

We opened two homes in new areas, Cheshire Springs in Ellesmere Port and Edgewater in Wallasey. In June 2022, Tyne Grange in Newcastle upon Tyne became our fourth ‘Outstanding’ CQC rated care home. In November 2022, less than a year after opening, Bennett Court was rated ‘Good’ by CQC.

So far in 2023, we've opened Roseside in Liverpool and built nine brand-new apartments at Bennett Court in South Elmsall. We've also opened in new areas with Tees Grange in Stockton-on-Tees and existing areas with Wheldale Heights in Castleford. We've opened in new areas with Adswood Lodge in Stockport, Shire Oaks Court in Walsall, Hylton Grange in Sunderland, Potters Green in Kilnhurst, Woolston House in Warrington and Greenacre Park in Leicester.

In 2024, we'll be celebrating our 25th anniversary! So far in 2024 we've opened new homes in Knowsley, Ashton-under-Lyne, Leeds and Telford. We're still growing, with new care homes coming soon in South Elmsall, Burnley, Huddersfield, Bishop Auckland and Cannock. We're also extending Potters Green and opening new units at Woolston House!
