Dementia design with the University of Stirling

A home designed around people living with dementia

Dementia is one of the fastest growing health challenges in the UK - but the right environment can make a life-changing difference.

At Springfield Vale in Barnsley, every detail has been carefully designed to support people living with dementia to feel safe, calm, and at home.

From clear layouts and thoughtful colour choices to low-stimulation spaces and therapeutic technology, the environment works alongside our care to support independence and reduce distress.

Unlike traditional care settings, which can sometimes increase confusion and anxiety, Springfield Vale has been purpose-built using the latest research and real-life experience of people living with dementia.

The result is a place where people can feel truly at home.

Designed in partnership with world leading dementia design specialists

Springfield Vale was created in collaboration with the University of Stirling’s Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC) - a global leader in evidence-based dementia design.

The home is built on their design principles proven to improve independence, orientation, emotional wellbeing, and overall quality of life.

It’s anticipated to be Exemplar Health Care’s first home to achieve the DSDC’s Dementia Design Gold Accreditation.

Our team that designs and develops our new homes have also completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Design for Dementia and Ageing at the university.

This expertise, alongside the learning from our partnership, will help us apply these principles across our other care homes.

Bedrooms with en-suite wet rooms

  • Small, homely communities of 11 bedrooms, carefully located to reduce confusion while supporting familiarity and predictability.

  • Identified with memory boxes, a room number, and personalised occupant signs in the unit’s colour, helping people recognise their own space more easily.
