The team at Yarningdale recently went the extra mile to bring together residents, families, friends, colleagues, and the wider local community for a day of football, friendship, and fundraising for The Salvation Army.
Eight football teams came together for the second annual Bernie Smith Cup, a tournament that honours the memory of a much loved former resident who had a lifelong passion for football.
The event attracted over 100 attendees including Exemplar Health Care residents and colleagues, as well as family members and local teams, , giving them an opportunity to come together to make new friends and cheer on their teams throughout the day.
The tournament was hosted at Robert Martin Sports Ground in Birnam Park, home to previous champions Moorgreen Colts FC.

Yarningdale residents Neil and Beth proudly managed their home teams, ‘Gunners FC’ and ‘You Reds’.
They were joined by six other teams including three local clubs - Moorgreen Colts FC, Eastwood and Kimberley FC, and a local pub team.
Teams from nearby Exemplar Health Care homes, Willowbeck and Meadowcroft, also joined the day alongside a team from Exemplar Health Care’s Support Centre.
After a dramatic penalty shoot-out final, Eastwood and Kimberley FC lifted the trophy to be crowned the new champions.
The day wasn’t just about football - it was full of healthy competition and a lot of fun!
It raised a total of £635, which will go directly to The Salvation Army - the charity selected by Yarningdale’s residents, to help fund their vital work in communities across the country.

Home Manager, Alison Walvin, who supported from the sidelines, commented:
“It’s put such a smile on my face seeing the team’s lace up their football boots and play their hearts out for a such a meaningful cause.
“Even though it didn’t go Yarningdale’s way, each team gave it their all and I couldn’t be prouder of this wonderful group of people.
“ I also want to give a huge shout out to Sarah Martin, our talented Activities Coordinator, for making this all happen – we couldn’t do it without you!”
