What started as a single postcard from a colleague has grown into an ‘around‑the‑world’ collection with 112 destinations - and counting.
For Richard, resident at Fairburn Vale, what might seem like a simple tradition has become something more meaningful – a way to spark conversations and build friendships.
Richard has always enjoyed learning about different places.
His postcard collection began with a thoughtful gesture from Garry, a Maintenance Technician at Fairburn Vale, who sent him a postcard from his holiday.
Richard shared: “I loved getting it through the post and reading about his holiday, so I thought it would be good to start a tradition.”
This small gesture became the beginning of a collection that continues to grow today - supported by colleagues who understand how important Richard’s interests are to him.
112 postcards and a world of stories
Today, Richard proudly displays 112 postcards on the walls of his bedroom.
His collection includes local landmarks, British seaside towns, European destinations such as Spain, and long-haul locations including America and Jamaica.

Richard shared, “They mean a lot to me, they’re all places I’ve never been.”
Building friendships and community
What started with a small gesture from a colleague soon spread throughout the home and beyond.
Team members started sending postcards from their travels, knowing how much they meant to Richard and every new card brings a conversation.
“They’re a great conversation starter when people come into my bedroom,” Richard says.
“I get to learn more about colleagues on a friendship level, and they can tell me about their holidays. It makes me feel important and involved.”
Even colleagues across the wider organisation have contributed after hearing about his collection.
Supporting what matters to each person
Person-centred care isn’t just about meeting people’s care needs - it’s about recognising what matters to them and finding creative ways to keep those interests alive.
For Richard, that means continuing to build his postcard collection, one destination at a time.
What began as one small act of kindness has since grown into a meaningful tradition - one that’s helped Richard feel connected, confident, and part of something bigger.
