Throughout July, St Andrew’s Court decided to take on the Samarathon challenge to support and help Samaritans save lives.

Samaritans set a challenge to run, jog or walk 26.2 miles, whenever and wherever you like throughout July. By taking on Samarathon or supporting others who are taking part, St Andrew’s Court in Hull are supporting Samaritans to be there for anyone who needs them.

Samaritans are there, day or night, for anyone who’s struggling to cope or who needs someone to listen without judgement or pressure.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has affected all of our lives. Samaritans is a critical service, needed now more than ever. Their volunteers are working hard to minimise disruption to their services and support the people who need their services.

St Andrew’s Court decided to take on the challenge, so Danielle took a ball of wool and measured the length of the garden path and calculated that, in order to complete 26.2 miles, they would need to do 28 laps of the garden path a day. This was then split up between all staff and service users to meet the target of 26.2 miles across the month.

Several service users enjoyed the beautiful weather in the garden throughout July and took the opportunity to do a couple of laps each day, making sure that they enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the beautiful garden - as well as soaking up some vitamin D in the process!

Staff also took part, both with and without the service users, creating some healthy competition at St Andrew's Court! The weather was sometimes a challenge, meaning that they had to up their game on those days with blue skies to meet their goal - in one day the team rallied together and managed to achieve 50 laps!

About the challenge, Samaritans CEO, Julie Bentley shares:  “We all know that keeping physically fit has a positive impact on our mental wellbeing. Living in a world where people can feel a lot of pressure to look good, we thought it was important to roll out a fitness-fundraising initiative that focused on feeling good. We hope supporters will encourage their friends and family of all ages to take part so it can be an achievable challenge they share and enjoy together.”

Well done for take on the incredible challenge for Samaritans, St Andrew’s Court!
