Recognised for outstanding clinical expertise

Judges praised Matthew’s deep clinical knowledge and passion for dementia care, recognising him as a role model for best practice and innovation:

“Matthew possesses exceptional dementia expertise and a genuine passion for supporting people living with dementia.

“A true ambassador for outstanding dementia care, he champions research, learning, and innovation to enhance practice.

“His dedication consistently elevates quality of life, dignity, and wellbeing for people living with dementia, making a meaningful, lasting impact every day.”

Award-winning clinical leadership

Matthew leads the Heatons Unit at Adswood Lodge, supporting adults with complex needs arising from dementia.

His approach blends strong clinical expertise with personalised, life story led care - taking time to understand what matters to each person and shaping support around their goals.

Under his leadership, the team has strengthened its focus on therapeutic and psychosocial approaches, reducing reliance on medication by prioritising meaningful engagement, sensory support and relationship-based care.

Speaking after his win, Matthew said:

“I’m incredibly proud to receive this award, but I’m even more proud of the team around me who bring our vision for dementia care to life every day.

“Great dementia care is about understanding the person - who they are, what matters to them, and what a great day looks like for them - and then creating the right environment for them to thrive.

"To be recognised for something I’m so passionate about is truly humbling.”

Sarah Lydon, Home Manager at Adswood Lodge, added:

“Matthew represents the very best of our home and our sector.

"His innovative approach and compassionate leadership have had a lasting impact on the people he supports and the colleagues he leads.

"This recognition is thoroughly deserved.”
