What if your job meant helping someone rediscover their confidence? Jodie Yates is an Activities Coordinator at Walton Grove, and her day is full of making moments that matter.
One morning she might be organising a karaoke session with a resident who loves classic rock, and the next she’s helping someone regain their mobility working alongside a Physiotherapist.
Jodie says: “No two days are the same - and that’s the best bit! I could be supporting someone on a trip out, planning a themed party, or just spending meaningful one-to-one time with people. This job is so varied, I love every minute of it.”
Jodie’s job title might be Activities Coordinator, but to the people she supports, she’s a memory-maker, confidence-builder, and everyday fun bringer.
“One of the best parts of my job is finding ways to help people believe in themselves again”
“One person I supported at Acer Mews, Sharyn, had lost a leg and was using a mobility scooter, but she’d lost a lot of confidence. It can be scary if you don’t feel as secure, and even little things like going up a curb can knock your confidence.
“I thought, let’s make it fun! So, we set up a ‘driving test’ with high-vis vests and clipboards -, the full works. We took it very seriously, but it was also a good laugh. Before Sharyn knew it, she’d done the thing she said she couldn’t do.”
Regaining independence was Sharyn’s goal, and with the help of Jodie and the team, she achieved a big milestone that opened up a world outside the home.
“I honestly think having a laugh helps people forget the fear for a while. You forget you’re nervous because you’re laughing. That’s when you get those real breakthroughs.”
“It’s incredible to see people do things they never thought possible. One of the best things about working at Exemplar Health Care is that staffing levels are based on each person’s individual needs. It gives you the time to really get to know them and support them to do what they want to. For example, Sharyn wanted to build up her strength, so we started going to Zumba fitness classes. She now has a prosthetic leg, and is doing really well. She’s continued with her exercises, building her strength and balance. It’s been an amazing outcome.”
“Seeing her so confident meant the world”
One recent moment that really stole the show was, after Jodie had worked with Sharyn to build up her confidence, they attended a full-blown Alice in Wonderland themed afternoon tea in Manchester.
But the magic didn’t start at the venue, it started right at Acer Mews.
“Sharyn really wanted to go. So, we went shopping for the perfect dress and gave her a full makeover - hair, makeup, everything. When she looked in the mirror, she absolutely lit up.
“That’s why I do this job,. Seeing Sharyn feel confident and beautiful - it meant the world to both of us.”
