Meet Philip, Health Care Assistant at Dearnevale
After 14 years as an Aircraft Engineer in the Royal Air Force, Philip decided to start a career in care. Here, he speaks about the support and training he’s received since starting as a Health Care Assistant at Dearnevale.

I’ve always enjoyed helping people, so it made sense to build a career around that desire to help.

I've helped a few poorly family members, and after looking after them, I started thinking about a career in care.

I jumped at the chance to work at Dearnevale and I’ve never looked back!

The training since I’ve started has been second to none.

We had a four-day induction which covered all the mandatory training. Then I started ‘on the job’ training in my home.

You get paired with a buddy who’s normally a Team Leader, and we’re able to shadow and learn from them. Everyone was so helpful – it felt like I had everyone as buddies!

We have so much fun as a team and with the people we support.

It’s a really happy environment.

I’d encourage anyone who’s been thinking about a career in care to just do it!

Helping people is really rewarding. You can see the difference you’re making and you get to have a laugh!

I couldn’t think of a better reason to get up for work in the morning.

Using creativity to make a real impact

After learning a person he supports once loved gaming with their family, Philip called on his hobby to make a real difference.

Philip designed and 3D-printed a simple, low-cost adaptation to an existing Xbox controller. The customised design allows full gameplay using just one hand and a leg movement, making it accessible and easy to use.
