Scotia Heights care home in Stoke-on-Trent is celebrating after being awarded a ‘Good’ rating from Care Quality Commission (CQC).

In November 2021, CQC – the health and social care regulator for England – carried out an unannounced visit of the Scotia Heights, on Scotia Road, to inspect standards of care and safety.

The home was awarded a rating of ‘Good’ in the ‘Safe’ and ‘Well-led’ categories and an overall rating of ‘Good’. This means that Scotia Heights is rated ‘Good’ in all five of the key areas – Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led.

During their visit, the inspector found that the home had enough of the right staff, with the right skills mix, to ensure that service users are safe and that their needs are being met. The home is currently recruiting to enable them to support more adults living with complex needs and to enhance consistency of care.

The CQC report states: “We saw positive interactions between staff and people. Staff were knowledgeable about the people they support and demonstrated they took a person-centred approach to providing care.”

Colleagues were praised for supporting people to stay in touch with their loved ones during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. One relative told the inspector that staff had “Gone over and above the call of duty.”

The inspector was satisfied that the home continues to follow infection and prevention measures and safe visiting guidance, to ensure that every stays well and safe.

The inspection also found that the home had strong leadership and management. Cheryl Wildman, the Home Manager, was praised for being supportive and approachable, and encouraging an open culture in the home.

Cheryl shares: “We are thrilled that Scotia Heights has achieved a ‘Good’ rating in its latest inspection.

“The home absolutely deserves this recognition and is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of all of our colleagues.

“The care team go over and above to make every day better for the residents in the home. We are proud of every single member of the team - without whom we would not have achieved this.”
