From creating menus to themed parties: a day in the life as a Cook

I’m Katie, the Cook at Yarningdale, and my role is so much more than just preparing meals.

It's about creativity, making a real difference in people's lives, and being part of a supportive team.

My background in food and nutrition gave me a solid foundation, but working in care has truly opened my eyes to the rewarding impact food can have on everyone!

More than just meals

While nutritious food is key, it doesn’t have to be boring.

My mornings often start with the usual kitchen routines like preparing breakfast, getting lunch ready, and keeping everything spotless. But that can change in an instant, and most days bring something new and exciting.

One minute I’m creating a classic dish, and the next I’m collaborating with the Activities Team on a themed party or helping plan for a resident’s birthday.

I also work closely with our Health Care Assistants and Nurses to make sure everyone’s dietary needs are met, making sure the people we care for get the best food experience possible!

From pancakes to pretzels

Food is such a big part of our lives and should always be enjoyed, and at Yarningdale we make sure it is!

We celebrate everything from Pancake Day to 80th birthdays and Australia Day.

For these events, I'm often involved beyond just the cooking – I sometimes stay and party with residents, seeing the joy that good food and good company can bring.

We've even had ‘culinary journeys’ around the UK and to different holiday destinations, bringing residents' requests to life through food.

When someone mentioned their wish to visit Paris, we brought Paris to them with a special themed meal! Everyone loved it!

Making the best food for everyone

A crucial part of my role is making that sure, where needed, meals meet IDDSI (International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative) standards.

It’s all about making food safe and enjoyable for everyone, especially those with swallowing difficulties.

It also involves creative presentation skills to make modified foods look just as appealing as regular meals. It’s all about thinking outside the box!

When I first started, I didn’t have experience with modified diets, but through the support and training provided, I’ve developed my skills and knowledge.

One of my proudest moments came after a resident moved from a regular diet to a Level 4 pureed diet. I was told their favourite snack was a cheese sandwich and Pom Bear crisps.

I was determined they wouldn’t miss out! I made him a Level 4 appropriate cheese sandwich and even handmade him Level 4 Pom Bear crisps.

Knowing I’ve made someone’s day with food is incredibly rewarding!

Menus from the people we care for

Our residents are heavily involved in all the food we make – they’re at the heart of everything we do!

Menus are designed around some of their favourite dishes, and we have a monthly meeting where they give us feedback on what they like and don't like, what they want to see more of, or if they want to try new things.

We take all the feedback we receive very seriously, which is why we use feedback books -  help us understand what works and what needs improving.

The Yarningdale Team

After university, I started as a Health Care Assistant at Yarnigdale. I quickly fell in love with the home and the residents.

I worked my way up to a senior position, often helping in the kitchen. When the opportunity arose to cover as a Cook for six months, everything just clicked. I had found my calling, and I absolutely loved it!

If you're considering a career as a Cook in a care home, take the plunge and give it a go! It’s the most rewarding job, and we have so much fun.
