It's never too late to start a career in care: Angie's story

27 April 2021

Angie works as a Health Care Assistant at Yarningdale

Angie is a Health Care Assistant at Yarningdale in Ripley. Having worked at Tesco’s for over 30 years, and volunteering with local charities, Angie decided to work in social care for a new challenge and to make a difference.

Angie has always had an interest in helping people – she’s volunteered with local charities and worked as a Community Champion whilst at Tesco’s.

During the pandemic, Angie wanted a new challenge and to do something that was more rewarding – which is why she applied for a role at Yarningdale

She found that a lot of the skills she has are transferable to a career in social care. Angie says: “Sharing a smile, showing you care and knowing your stuff are part of Tesco’s values, which are transferable to my role now”

Angie was attracted to Exemplar Health Care because of our strong company values. She shares: “I had several job offers but chose Exemplar Health Care because they support younger adults living with complex needs and I wanted this new challenge and opportunity to make a difference.”

And since joining, Angie is confident that this has been the right career move for her.

“Every day is different at Yarningdale,” says Angie. “The staff are all lovely as we all have the same goal to make every day better. The kindness has a ripple effect and everyone wants the best for the service users. I am happy to come to work every day.”

Angie has also keen ambitions to develop within the company: “I’ve already spoken to my Manager about doing a level 2 Maths and English qualification to improve my core skills. I’m also interested in doing a Level 3 Lead Health and Social Care qualification.

“At 56 years old I am a bit apprehensive, but also very excited. I want to be the best version of myself and Exemplar Health Care is there to support me along the way.”
