After a life-changing leg amputation, Sharyn had one goal - to feel independent again.
She’d spent over a year in hospital before moving to Acer Mews, where our team supports her with complex health challenges, including type 1 diabetes, a brain injury, and a tracheostomy.
With her mobility impacted and confidence low, regaining a sense of independence became a key focus of her care.
Fast forward a few months, and Sharyn is now celebrating a milestone moment - passing her very own driving test!

Sharyn recently got a brand-new mobility scooter to help her get around more freely.
To build her confidence (and make it fun!), the team at Acer Mews designed a specially-made obstacle course in the garden - complete with cones, signs, and a custom-printed driving license at the finish line.
“It was amazing - I had to do a three-point turn and reverse park,” Sharyn laughed. “Everyone was cheering me on!”
The activity wasn’t just for fun - it was designed to build confidence, improve coordination, and mark a real step forward in Sharyn’s independence journey.
Thanks to our high staffing levels and holistic support, the team had the time to plan a meaningful, person-centred activity that reflected Sharyn’s progress - and helped her celebrate how far she’s come.
“When I moved here, I needed support for almost everything. Now, I can get around on my own and even pop outside when I want. I feel more like myself again.”
With her new wheels and license proudly displayed, Sharyn’s continuing to work towards her next big goal - moving back into her own home with her partner, and one day using a prosthetic limb.
