Neville Court gets garden makeover to make accessible outdoor space for residents

Our Neville Court complex needs care home in Barnsley has had a garden makeover to make an accessible space for residents to socialise, play football and stay active.
Spending time outdoors has been shown to have lots of benefits including providing physical exercise, helping to maintain normal sleeping patterns, improving mood and helping people to cope with stress.
The team at Neville Court, which supports 20 adults living with complex needs, have worked tirelessly to revamp the garden at the home, providing an accessible outdoor space for residents to enjoy.
The transformation started at the beginning of lockdown, and last week, the home welcomed the last of the summer sunshine to hold its garden ‘reveal’ party.
Back in April, the team got down to work removing raised flower beds and tidying up the trees and shrubs. They levelled out the whole area and laid fresh turf and paving, providing an accessible walk around the building for all residents, including those who use a wheelchair.
A number of residents love music and dancing, so the home’s Maintenance Team built a stage, which will host outdoor concerts and shows throughout the year.
Neville Court’s Home Manager, Judith Bagley, shared:
“The home has predominantly male residents, who enjoy being outside and playing football. However, the old garden didn’t provide much space for outdoor activities.
“It’s been fantastic to be able to make this change to our home, so that we can continue to make every day better for our residents.
“We’re so excited to start using our new garden, which is accessible for everyone and has a special stage for entertainment and discos.
“The smile on people’s faces when we unveiled the new outdoor space said everything – and it’s incredible to be able to make our home money homely, so that people feel happy and settled living here.”
