Complex care in Castleford
Welcome to Wheldale Heights, where we provide nursing care for adults living with complex mental and physical health needs arising from neurological conditions such as acquired brain injury, dementia, and Huntington's disease.
Located on Wheldon Road in Ferry Fryston, Wheldale Heights has 24 bedrooms across two small, purpose-built units, creating a homely and supportive environment that’s more responsive to individual needs.
We’re dedicated to making every day better for the people we support, helping them lead meaningful lives and achieve their personal goals.
Our trained team provides high acuity, nurse-led care services, particularly for individuals with secondary diagnoses, co-morbidities, or those who’ve experienced previous failed placements.
Whether you’re a healthcare professional seeking a complex care placement, or you’re exploring care options for a loved one, view our services below or contact us to find out more.
Our care
The people we support at Wheldale Heights would often be in a hospital or higher acuity setting if not placed with us.

Lynx Unit
Lynx Unit provides a male-only environment for older working age adults (50+) who display frequent behaviours of concern that pose a risk to themselves or others, and may have a forensic background .
These behaviours are often linked to a mental health or neurological condition such as acquired brain injury or dementia.
Led by a Registered Mental Health Nurse, the team provides structured, evidence-based behavioural support.
This includes functional behaviour assessments, personalised support plans, proactive strategies, skill development, and safe reactive strategies - all underpinned by our Exemplar Positive Behaviour Support approach.
People typically move to Lynx from hospital or a secure setting, or following a placement breakdown with another provider, often requiring enhanced staffing and tailored observation levels, including 1:1 or 2:1 support, at first.
Over time, this tends to reduce as they settle into a consistent, person-centred environment.
Orion Unit
Orion Unit supports working-age adults in the early stage of a neurological condition such as Huntington’s disease, whose primary presentation is behavioural and mental health symptoms.
People may also have co-occurring physical health needs such as bladder and bowel conditions, mobility or speech impairments, cognitive decline, and clinical interventions like PEGs or catheters.
With both General and Mental Health Nurses on the team, who are trained in Huntington’s disease, Orion provides integrated care that bridges the gap between traditional neuro and mental health services.
Orion is an active environment that promotes meaningful occupation, emotional wellbeing, cognitive support, and functional independence - building the foundation for future care.
This approach goes beyond standard residential or nursing care, offering a clinical yet engaging environment where people can live well and maintain quality of life.
As the disease progresses and clinical needs increase, we support transitions to either Lynx Unit in the home, or Fairburn Mews on the same site, ensuring continuity of care in a familiar environment.
