Hear from our Head of Learning and Development, Natasha Furness, about how we support our colleagues through effective supervision and performance development reviews.
There's no reason to feel nervous about supervisions. They're a great way to check in on how you’re doing at work, give and receive feedback, and look to the future.
It’s an essential part of continuing professional development and ensuring high quality care.
It gives you the opportunity to reflect on what’s gone well, or not so well, and look at where improvements could be made.
It also provides vital time with your line manager to discuss your future career ambitions, and how we can support you to get there.
What is supervision?
Supervision involves meeting regularly with your manager to review your workload and performance, identify learning and development opportunities, and keep up-to-date with the latest news and updates.
There are different types of supervision depending on your role.
Clinical supervision, which supports learning and develop competency related to a specific clinical task.
Professional supervision, focused on identifying professional learning and development needs and CPD.
Operational/line management supervision.
What do you talk about during a supervision?
Our values are at the heart of everything we do, including the supervision process.
During supervisions, we encourage you to reflect on how you continue to display our values of fun, integrity, responsiveness, success and teamwork.
Our supervision record template suggests the following headings for discussion, however we encourage colleagues to ‘own’ their supervision time and use it as an opportunity to celebrate their successes, identify further training and discuss any concerns.
Achievements
Health and wellbeing
Safeguarding
Professional conduct
Learning and development
I find the PDR process really useful for reflecting on my successes and identifying any areas for development. It’s easy to forget all of the great work you do. Supervisions are a great chance to reflect and celebrate them.
Do you offer clinical supervision for nursing colleagues?
Yes, we do!
It’s based on Procter’s model of clinical supervision which covers:
restorative/supportive – focus on health and wellbeing
normative/managerial – focus on ongoing monitoring and evaluation
formative/educational – focus on skills and knowledge.
It gives you the opportunity to celebrate your achievements, discuss your health and wellbeing, and reflect on key elements of your nursing role including:
named Nurse responsibilities and care documentation
medication management
quality assurance
development and revalidation.
Do you offer annual performance reviews?
As well as regular supervision, all colleagues will receive an annual performance development review (PDR).
This formal meeting reflects on:
last year’s objectives
your performance around key competencies such as quality teamwork and time management
what elements of your role you find most rewarding
what elements you find most challenging and how you can overcome them
your career aspirations for the next 12 months.
In them, you’ll set three objectives for the year ahead.
