Last week we were thrilled to take several of our Service User Council members to Hull to help us select the interior design of our new home, St Andrew’s Court.

The home, which opens in September, had several design choices available across furniture, fittings and textiles which were shared with the Council by Karen Stanley, Development Manager and Jade Turner, Developments Support Assistant at the nearby Wheeler Children’s Centre.

Mood boards, photographs, materials and samples of flooring, textiles, carpet and wall coverings were considered by residents from our other homes – Ron, Mick, Stephen, Michael and Chris, as well as Michelle who had dialled in remotely via Skype.

The session saw service users select their preferences for the designs and colours for the whole 20-bed home, from the entrance hallway to the bedrooms and en-suite facilities. The options were put to a vote, and those which received the majority vote will be briefed into the home build team.

Bright colours were favoured alongside fresh, vibrant patterns and the Service User Council input allowed the Development team to reconsider the shape of some of the tables in the Café/Bistro area, ensuring they are most appropriate for occasional use from wheelchair users. We are looking forward to seeing the results of all the day’s decisions, and to inviting council members back to Hull to see the finished home this autumn!

Enabling our residents to make choices about their lives is something we feel passionately about and supports us in making every day better. Involving the Service User Council in development and design decisions is an important step in both involving them in the growth of our services but in also giving us an opportunity to learn from their experiences and preferences.

We will share a selection of images of the home interior once the refurbishment is complete and look forward to informing our new residents that their peers in our other care homes across the country helped us to decide the way their new home looks.
