Our Central Services Teams are invaluable to the successful running of our care homes. This National Payroll Week, we’re shining a light on the Payroll Team at Exemplar Health Care. In this blog, Angela Cammock, Head of Payroll, talks about the important role that the team plays in the company and shares more about an exciting opportunity to join the team.

This week we’re celebrating National Payroll Week.

At Exemplar Health Care, the Payroll Team manages one of the biggest expenses within the business - people’s wages - which is certainly no small task.

When you think about a successful social care provider, payroll probably isn't the first thing that you think about.

However, we know that our colleagues are the most valuable asset to the company – they are the people who deliver outstanding care in our care homes. So it’s vital that they’re paid correctly and on time.

Research also suggests that re-occurring issues with pay is one of the reasons why people leave a job – one survey found that 49% of workers will start a new job search after experiencing just two payroll errors. In a sector that faces ongoing challenges with recruitment and retention, it’s vital that we get this right!

The role of the Payroll Team

The Payroll Team at Exemplar Health Care works closely with colleagues from across the company to ensure that everyone is paid accurately and on time.

The team also ensures that the business is compliant from a tax and employment legislative perspective, and keeps up-to-date with any changes and new regulations.

Payroll is key to building trust

Payroll plays a huge role in developing trust with colleagues.

Over the past few years, we’ve put a lot of time and effort into building this trust..

To do this, we’ve streamlined our payroll process and worked with all colleagues involved in the payroll process to educate them on the importance of accurate and timely payments.

We’ve reviewed how we communicate with colleagues about payroll and important changes, to ensure that everyone understands how payroll works and knows about any changes in advance of them being made.

Payroll during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic

Over the last 18 months, it has certainly been challenging during the Coronavirus pandemic.

With over 100 legislative changes around Coronavirus (COVID-19), the team has adapted swiftly and steered the business to ensure that it continues to meet the required legislation.

The skills needed to work in payroll

The Payroll Team at Exemplar Health Care works across the company, and interacts with several teams including our care home teams, HR, finance and operations. We also support over 3500 colleagues with their payroll, so to work in the team, good communication is key!

As Exemplar Health Care grows, with plans to double in size over the next five years, we’re adapting all the time and we’re always looking for ways to streamline and improve the accuracy of the payroll process – so being adaptive, creative and flexible is vital.

Payroll is always a busy role, so motivation and organisation are two key skills you need. There are hundreds of manual tasks associated with the payroll at Exemplar Health Care, alongside automated services, so there’s always something to do!

Keeping your eye on the end goal and the impact of a positive payroll experience is key to staying motivated!

What it’s like to work in payroll

Every day in the Payroll Team is certainly different, but our team motto is that we love a challenge!

We strive to create a great workplace for all our colleagues. The people who work in our small team come from different backgrounds, bringing a wealth of experience to the business. Our skills, personalities and ways of work complement each other!

Exemplar Health Care is committed to developing colleagues, and that includes the Payroll Team. We’re committed to providing everyone in the team with access to training and qualifications to develop their skills and support their career development.
