Working as an Occupational Therapist in social care is extremely rewarding. Sara is an Occupational Therapist (OT) at Tyne Grange home in Newcastle upon Tyne. In her role, she works with individuals to identify and achieve their goals and values, and supports them to take part in meaningful activities to maintain their independence.
Sara is a key member of the Therapy Team at Tyne Grange and works with the wider Care Team to help people to identify and achieve their goals, by breaking them down into achievable steps.
Her role involves:
- supporting people to develop their everyday living skills including washing, cooking and budgeting
- supporting people to find employment, education and volunteering opportunities
- liaising with other healthcare professionals to review people’s care needs
- completing assessments for assistive aids and equipment, and supporting people to use them.
Why choose Exemplar Health Care?
Sara shares: “I decided to work for Exemplar Health Care as I relate to their goals and they have great training and development opportunities for staff.
“I was also very impressed with the facilities at the care home in Newcastle, as well as the bespoke induction.
“What I enjoy most is working with our service users to facilitate activities that they really enjoy, and ensuring that we make every day fun.”
Learning and development
When Sara started with Exemplar Health Care, she completed a bespoke induction which included mandatory training and specific courses for her role, such as courses about the Mental Capacity Act and mental health conditions.
Sara adds: “Even though I have only been in this role for a short while, I have completed my MOCA, Montreal Cognitive Assessment Training, and am now certified to complete these assessments in-house.”
Would you recommend working with Exemplar Health Care?
"I would highly recommend applying for a position at Exemplar Health Care," says Sara. "I have been extremely well supported and encouraged to complete additional training.
"In the future I hope to progress my career within the company and complete further training courses, maybe even a masters!"
