Meet Sarah: PBS Clinical Advisor at Ribble View

24 May 2021

Sarah is EPBS Lead at Ribble View

Sarah, a Registered Mental Health Nurse, is the Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) Clinical Advisor at Ribble View. In this role, she works with the team to implement positive cultures and PBS in the home to empower and support people who display behaviours of concern, to manage their behaviours and live a fulfilling life.

Sarah qualified as a Registered Mental Health Nurse in 2010. Since then, she’s gained a wealth of experience in various settings including EMI, male and female acute mental health, psychiatric intensive care (PICU) units and low secure services.

Sarah quickly realised that she had a passion for supporting people longer term, and started a role as a Charge Nurse at a rehabilitation service.

This led to her being involved in the development and opening of a standalone locked rehabilitation hospital for females with complex mental health needs, developing her skills in recruitment, marketing, writing policies and implementing clinical policies. Her dedication and skills contributed to the service achieving ‘Good’ in all areas of its first CQC inspection.

PBS Clinical Advisor at Ribble View

In December 2020, Sarah joined Ribble View care home in Preston as a Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) Clinical Advisor.

In her role, Sarah implements positive cultures and PBS in the home, and has supported the team with applying soft words, calm cards and self soothe. She’s also played a vital role in facilitating virtual reality therapy sessions and developing sensory and de-stimulation suites in the home.

Sarah also supports colleagues to develop their knowledge and skills around observations, engagement and confidence when managing challenges.

Delivering specialist training

Utilising her mental health background, Sarah delivers specialist training sessions covering mental illness, personality disorder and self-harm, and includes the home’s Service User Ambassador in delivering training.

Sarah believes that the key to success is collaborative working - she works with people to develop PBS plans, manage their emotions and maximise their independence.

"I look forward to going to work"

When asked what she enjoys about her role, "I look forward to going to work and seeing the home developing each and every day," says Sarah.

"The residents are amazing – I love seeing their smiles and happiness each day, and watching them engage and progress in therapy sessions.

"We celebrate every success - the team are growing and put in every ounce of energy to making Ribble View the best that it can be."
