Adam is a Service User Ambassador at Greenside Court and a Regional Ambassador for the Yorkshire and Humber region.
He’s one of Exemplar Health Care’s longest-serving Service User Ambassadors, with eight years’ experience supporting the council’s work.
At 27, Adam’s life changed overnight when his drink was spiked, causing a brain bleed that left him in a coma. When he woke up, he could only communicate by blinking and needed support with every aspect of daily life.
Since moving to Greenside Court, Adam has made significant progress through nurse-led support and therapy.
He’s regained movement, improved his communication using assistive technology, become more independent, and achieved a Level 2 English qualification while studying at college.
Today, Adam is a Regional Service User Ambassador, using his lived experience to support other residents, contribute to interviews, induction, and training, and help shape services.
He’s passionate about helping others build confidence and is focused on continuing his studies, developing his independence, and building a positive future.
Being a Service User Ambassador makes me feel important. When you take ideas to council meetings, you’re listened to and can make a real difference. I love working with others to help improve people’s lives.”
“I like being able to share my experience with people who are scared about moving into a care home, just like I was. It feels good knowing I’ve helped someone.
“Being a Service User Ambassador makes me feel important. I’ve been involved in lots of things, including choosing décor, writing policies, and interviewing new colleagues.
“But it’s not just about what I want, it’s about what other people in the home want too. I can bring ideas and feedback to Service User Council meetings that can improve people’s lives.
“I love that people come to me with ideas to take forward, and I always feel listened to and encouraged to be independent.
“Being involved makes me feel like more than just a resident. I love my role. It’s the best thing I’ve been able to do at Greenside Court.”
