Making moves at Maypole Grove

Throughout the summer, service users at Maypole Grove will be working closely with Exemplar’s engagement teams, shaping their future within their home.

Having recently celebrated Maypole’s first birthday, staff and service users at the Birmingham home are keen to refocus and develop on what has been a triumphant year.

Mark Lee joined Maypole Grove as care team leader last year: “The past year has been great for me personally; it has been very rewarding to shape the service so far, work with some incredible service users and form a family here. I’m excited to see what the rest of 2018 holds for us – we have a really great team with a positive attitude, and service users who continue to keep us motivated.”

Service users at Maypole Grove live with a range of complex behaviours, as well as physical and  neuro-disabilities; but don’t let anything stand in their way.

Working closely with the activities teams, service users were able to rent allotments close to the home – a project they are keen to start this summer. Whilst the glorious weather continues, service users can’t wait to transform the overgrown allotment to a beautiful area, suitable for them to gain valuable life skills.

As well as this, service users and staff will look to engage more with the local community – making use of The Hub. The Hub at Maypole is an extension to the home, available for free hire for community groups, local meets or to hold small events. “We’ve recognised over the past 12 months how much the local community keeps a watchful eye over all of us at Maypole, so we are keen to extend a thanks to them and involve them more with our future events”, continues Mark.

Service User Engagement Manager, Sophia Feurtado said: “Throughout August I will be spending a lot of time with service users at Maypole, building on the activities or skills they have discovered over the past year.

It’s a really exciting time for Maypole as I can bring forwards ideas from other Exemplar homes, whilst encouraging goals and outcomes with everyone here. With the home still being so new, we are in a fortunate position to shape the future of the home, and share our progress with the Service User Council – hopefully encouraging positive changes to others.”
