Journey into education

Service user Adam at Rotherham care home Greenside Court has begun his journey into education.

Last week, Adam, who lives with complex mental ill-health, signed up for a maths course with Learn Direct – his opportunity to develop his skillset, boost his confidence and work towards his personal goals.

Not only is Adam excited about beginning his journey with the team at Learn Direct, but the staff and other learners were excited to take Adam on board, and are all looking forward to working with one another. Whilst Adam will have homework, the majority of his studies will be completed at the local Learn Direct centre.

Although studies haven’t yet begun, Adam has been taking the time to visit his new learning centre, getting to know the staff and fellow pupils.

Engagement team member Rachel cares for Adam at Greenside Court, and encourages him to explore his dreams, aspirations and work towards the goals laid out in his personal care plan. Knowing how Adam wanted to further his knowledge – which will also assist with managing his complex behaviour – Rachel used the Community Resources Directory to find a suitable course.

“The Service User Engagement team at Exemplar put together a resource directory for all homes, sharing community resources within their area. Adam had been talking to me for a while about developing his skills, so when I cast my eye through the directory I found the Learn Direct course. I think it is a great way for him to meet new people, gain a qualification and take another step towards more independent living.” – said Rachel.
