Ribble View care home in Preston is rated good

Ribble View, one of our complex needs care homes in Preston, is celebrating after being awarded a ‘Good’ rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in its latest inspection.

The CQC – the health and social care regulator for England – carried out an unannounced visit of Ribble View care home on Church Avenue, to inspect standards of care and safety. Ribble View had been awaiting re-inspection following their inspection in November 2020.

Ribble View has undergone a change in management team, introduced new posts to support the multi-disciplinary team, including an in-house Physiotherapist and PBS Practitioner, and executed a clear improvement plan to enable progression.

Since the last inspection, the inspector returned in July 2021 and has awarded the home an overall rating of ‘Good’ and ‘Good’ in all five of the key areas - safe, caring, effective, responsive and well-led. Read the full report.

The inspection team were highly complementary of the service and stated that “the management team should be proud of the turnaround!”

The inspection found that people who used the service, family members and colleagues provided positive feedback about the service and were complimentary about staff and management.

One relative told the inspectors: "If there is one thing I never doubted it is the caring nature of the staff, I have never had any worries about their attitude," and another said: "They are responsive to feedback and comments and it's nice to feel heard."

Safe staffing levels of trained staff

The inspection found that the home had safe staffing levels of adequately trained colleagues and new roles including the Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist and PBS Clinical Advisor had been a positive addition to the team.

Colleagues at Ribble View have the skills needed to care for adults living with complex needs, and the home has maintained 100% compliance for mandatory training for a number of months.

Enhancing the recruitment process has been a focus for the home, which was recognised in the report.

Colleagues at the home complete a two day corporate welcome induction, plus two days of Exemplar Positive Behaviour Support training, before completing a 31 day induction in the home.

The home has introduced a buddy system for new colleagues, which supports people when they first start working there which has now been successfully embedded.

This ensures that they have the right skills and knowledge to support people living in the home, who have a range of complex needs.

“Relatives told us they were confident their loved ones were safe in the home”

The inspection confirmed that people at Ribble View are treated with dignity and respect, and involved as partners in their care.

The home has introduced a range of roles for the people who live there, including being a Service User Ambassador, assisting with interviews, providing training for staff, working in the home’s café, delivering post, supporting the Chef with preparing food for parties and supporting the Domestic Team in the home.

These roles give service users a sense of purpose and empower them to develop their skills.

“The home has been on an incredible journey”

Lindsay Abraham, Commissioning Home Director at Ribble View, shares:

“I’m delighted that Ribble View has achieved a ‘Good’ rating in its latest inspection.

“The home has been on an incredible journey over the past two years, and this rating is an absolute testament to the colleagues in the home who are 100% dedicated to making every day better for the people we support.”
