Exemplar Health Care is piloting the Adult Care Worker Level 2 apprenticeship for new recruits, to attract people who want to start their career in care.

For some time, Exemplar Health Care has offered a range of apprenticeships to existing colleagues, but this is the first time that we'll be opening them up to new recruits. The programme offers people who want to start their career in care, the opportunity to learn on-the-job and gain nationally recognised qualifications. It’s ideal for students leaving higher education or people who are changing careers. And the great part is that we pay all of our apprentices the National Living Wage, so you can earn while you learn.

The pilot will take place at our Yarningdale home in Ripley, and will commence in Autumn 2020, which, if successful, we hope to roll out across all of our 32 homes.

If you’re interested in taking part, or know someone who is, please join our free webinar on 30 June 2020 at 10.00. We’ll give you a short introduction to the programme and you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions. To join, please register your interest here, and we’ll email you with a link. If you can’t make the webinar, please still register your interest and we’ll email you when applications open at the beginning of July.

What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a learning programme where you work alongside studying for a formal qualification - you'll get hands-on experience of the job role, a salary and the chance to train while you work. At least 20% of your time will be spent doing off-the-job training, which could be at college or with a nominated training provider.

The Adult Care Worker Level 2 apprenticeship takes 15 months to complete and teaches you the knowledge, skills and understanding that you need to work in a healthcare setting. The programme includes training about topics such as how to treat people with dignity, communication skills, adult safeguarding and promoting health and wellbeing. Apprentices will also complete functional skills training, unless they are exempt, at either level 1 or level 2 depending on their capability.

How it works

We’ll recruit you on a full-time basis which is 38.5 hours per week. You’ll spend 80% of your time working in the home and learning on-the-job, where you’ll have a buddy to support you throughout your apprenticeship. You’ll spend at least 20% of your time doing off-the-job learning, which might include going to college, doing eLearning or online research, reading care plans and policies in the home, or writing coursework. At regular points throughout your apprenticeship, a colleague from our training partner, Mercia College, will visit you to see how things are going.

You’ll be assessed throughout the apprenticeship and will also take an end point assessment. The assessments are carried out in various ways such as observation, Q&As and coursework. Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, you’ll have the opportunity to move into permanent employment where you can do further training, for example the Level 3 Lead Adult Care Worker apprenticeship, and progress in your career.

Who should apply

We’re looking for caring and dedicated people who want to make a difference to people’s lives, and have the right values to work in social care, as well as Exemplar Health Care’s values. The apprenticeship is ideal for people who want to start their career in social care, but don’t have any experience or qualifications, such as those leaving education or changing careers.
