A day in the life of a Care Home Manager

As a Registered Care Home Manager, you’ll be accountable for the operational functioning, strategic development and business success of your home.

No two days are the same. This is an inward and outward focused position, demanding attention to multiple factors, including but not limited to:

  • quality initiatives and improvement
  • team leadership and management
  • recruitment and colleague development
  • referral management and occupancy
  • data collection, analysis and interpretation
  • financial management
  • customer relationships and marketing to ensure business sustainability and success.

Clinical support in your home

Each of our care homes has one or two Clinical Nurse Managers as well as a team of Unit Managers, Registered Nurses and Health Care Assistants on each unit.

 

Dedicated support from a Regional Director

You’ll be supported by a Regional Director of Operations who oversees no more than ten care homes. This gives them the time to provide hands-on support.

 

High staffing levels

Our homes have higher than average staffing levels. Our average Nurse to Health Care Assistant ratio is 1:6, and it’s not uncommon to find up to six Health Care Assistants on a unit that supports ten people.

We have a talented team of central support functions who are there to help you as much as you’d like. Our Central Services includes our Quality Team, Clinical Team, Recruitment Team, HR Team, Learning and Development Team and Referrals Team.

Bespoke induction

We’ve used the experiences and knowledge of our Care Home Managers to develop a bespoke induction for our Care Home Managers.

When you start with us, you’ll do a welcome induction which introduces you to the company, our mission and values. You’ll also complete mandatory and statutory training.

After that, you’ll do a role specific induction which is relevant to your home. During your first few months with us, you’ll be supported by a buddy who’s already working in a Care Home Manager role.

What does a Care Home Manager do?

As a Care Home Manager, you’ll be responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day running of the care home.

Your role might include:

  • recruiting, training and managing staff
  • maintaining quality standards of care in line with Care Quality Commission (CQC) and other regulatory bodies
  • managing budgets
  • chairing meetings
  • ensuring health and safety compliance
  • building and maintaining relationships with partners such as local authorities and Clinical Commissioning groups.

 

What qualifications do I need to be a Care Home Manager?

Care Home Managers need experience working in a care or nursing setting. The type and length and experience will depend on the role you’re applying for, but it’ll usually be at least two year’s management or supervisory experience in a relevant care setting.

Many Care Home Managers have worked as Deputy Managers previously.

At Exemplar Health Care, we provide specialist nursing care for adults living with complex health needs. Our Care Home Manager roles require a first level nursing registration with a valid Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) pin number. In some circumstances and where it’s the right fit, will we recruit a Care Home Manager who has equivalent experience.

The role also requires:

  • management or supervisory training, certificate or qualification post qualification
  • clinical training and/or CPD
  • leadership and management training and/or CPD
  • management experience in a complex care service.
