Exemplar Health Care aims to help our service users live independent, fulfilling lives.
For Brett, a service user in Fairwinds, one of our Rotherham care homes, this meant fulfilling his wish to safely cook for himself.
In August, just two months since coming to the home, Brett completed an Awareness of Food Safety certificate after a course from Fairwinds’ catering manager, Ann.
Now he’s got the certificate, Brett can start cooking in the home’s kitchenette - with support from staff. Brett’s course was aimed at growing his independence, general skills and confidence.
Brett’s proud to have achieved the certificate.
“He’s doing amazing,” says Joanne Ropper-Lucera, a clinical nurse manager at Fairwinds.
“We plan for all our service users to live to their full potential. These are little steps for general skills of independence. But Brett’s achievement is a huge boost for his self-esteem.”
Now he’s got his certificate, Brett’s keen to cook chicken nuggets and chips in the kitchenette’s oven.
“Hopefully, he’ll eventually get started on a spaghetti bolognese,” says Joanne.
Since Brett arrived at Fairwinds, he’s quickly gained independence in other areas, too.
He now regularly goes out of the home unaccompanied for haircuts and trips to the shops.
As Brett’s got more independent, his care costs have also gone down, saving commissioners more than £900 each week.
By developing Brett’s independence skills, the care team aim for him to have the option of a lower-acuity facility such as OneCare, Exemplar Health Care’s reablement pathway for independent living – when he’s ready.
Because at Exemplar Health Care, we aim to make every day better.
Fairwinds cares for adults living with complex needs including neuro-disabilities, mental ill-health and dementia. The care home was rated “Good” by the CQC in 2017.Back to previous page
